Prepare a one-page timeline
List key events with dates, locations and a short note on how you know each fact. Mark estimates and hearsay as such. Bring the names of relevant records or witnesses and the one question you most need to answer. Note any court date or other deadline.
Keep sensitive material out of first contact
Use the first call or email to describe the type of matter, general location, timing and a safe way to reach you. Don’t include passwords, identification numbers, children’s records or sensitive attachments in an initial email. Ask how the investigator wants to receive documents securely.
End with a decision
Ask what can be checked first, what may be out of reach, and when you will get an update. If you have counsel, ask whether the investigator should coordinate directly with your attorney before you share case documents or authorize work.
