When Should You Hire a Private Investigator?

Learn when an investigator can help verify a fact, when to call an attorney first, and how to define a useful assignment.

Start with the decision, not the suspicion

Hiring can make sense when a specific fact would change your next step: locating a potential witness, verifying a record, or clarifying the timeline behind a civil dispute. Write down what you already know, what you can’t verify and what you would do differently with an answer.

Know who to call first

An investigator is not an emergency responder or a substitute for legal counsel. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911. If the issue involves a court order, a filing deadline or evidence for pending litigation, ask your attorney what to preserve and what work would actually help.

Set a stopping point

A reasonable assignment defines the target question, the time period, the deliverable and the point at which more work requires approval. Sometimes a records review is enough; sometimes the available information won’t support a reliable conclusion. Both are useful things to know early.

General information, not legal advice. For advice on a specific matter, speak with a qualified attorney.
