How Does Process Service Work in Michigan?

Understand what a Michigan process server needs, why methods vary and what to do with proof of service.

Identify the documents and deadline

Process service is formal delivery of legal papers. The right method depends on the document, recipient and applicable court rules. Michigan Court Rules 2.103 through 2.105 are a starting point for civil matters; ask your attorney or consult official court guidance for your specific case.

Provide details the server can use

Confirm you have the complete document packet, a deadline, the recipient’s correct legal name and the best address information you may lawfully share. Ask how attempts will be documented and what happens if the recipient cannot be located. Do not assume you may switch to another method without checking the rule or obtaining a required court order.

Make a plan for proof of service

Ask what proof the server will provide, when you will receive it and who is responsible for filing it with the court if required. A delivery and a completed court filing are different steps. If timing is tight, tell the server and your attorney up front.
